Jurassic World: The Game (JW:TG) is developer Ludia’s attempt at tying in an already existing game (Jurassic Park Builder), with the Jurassic World movie that came out in 2015, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. However, in stark contrast to what most people could believe, this is not the first game Jurassic Park building sim to ever grace the video game industry. Aside from the aforementioned Jurassic Park Builder, this honor goes to Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis for the Xbox, Playstation 2, and PC platforms.

Sandbox games were in their infancy by the time that Grand Theft Auto III rolled around, but this latest chapter in the series laid the foundation for the genre, creating a blueprint that hundreds of games would reference for decades to come. GTA 3 was weird, violent, and simply impossible to put down as you explored the rain-soaked streets and got into all kinds of mischief. A killer section of radio stations, actual consequences for your actions, and a dangerous underworld was unheard of at the time, but GTA 3 nailed all those elements and more on the first try, sticking its landing in the gaming history books.

Rockstar outdid itself with Red Dead Redemption 2, the follow-up to a near-perfect game. Despite that ‘2’, this is a prequel where you spend time with the characters you’re hunting down in the first game. You’re part of a family of crooks, conning and sharpshooting your way across the Wild West. Despite being an outlaw who kills indiscriminately, Rockstar created one of the most likable protagonists in games with Arthur Morgan, which makes the inevitable ending all that more bitter. But even outside the story, the world is the real star of the show. Every lonely shack, every cave, every landmark has its own story for you to uncover as you roam this expansive, beautiful, untamed landscape.

Players can go from building a basic four walls and a roof shelter to keep out the spiders, to going down a YouTube rabbit hole to look up redstone circuit ideas in a matter of mere hours. It’s a cliche to say, but the limit of Minecraft truly is the imagination of the player, something that’s exponentially compounded once you log into an online session with friends. If you aren’t starting an open play game with the question “so, what are we building today?” you’re doing it all wrong!

Although it redefined the franchise, God of War is still an action game. The cinematic story is underscored by a rewarding combat system that goes beyond hacking and slashing. The story is excellent, too, expanding from a somber central conflict at the start of the game to an epic involving gods, giants, and dragons.
